3x GRAMMY winner Samara Joy has released a new single“Autumn Nocturne” today from her forthcoming studio album Portrait, due out October 11th on Verve Records. Originally written by Joe Myrow and Kim Gannon and released in 1941, the composition reflects on the changing seasons and offers a nostalgic reminder of lost love. Joy’s interpretation of the tune highlights her “one of a kind voice” (CBS Mornings) and the intimate, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band, an egalitarian octet featuring trumpeter Jason Charos, trombonist Donavan Austin, saxophonists David Mason and Kendric McCallister, pianist Connor Rohrer, bassist Felix Moseholm and drummer Evan Sherman.
Today’s release is a new arrangement of “Autumn Nocturne” by Kendric McCallister and is co-produced by Joy and veteran trumpeter/bandleader/multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch. Listen to “Autumn Nocturne” HERE.
Emerging after a busy year of touring all over the world, Joy’s forthcoming album finds the 24-year-old Bronx native channeling her success into the pursuit of musical exploration. Portrait, the follow up to her 2022 breakout album Linger Awhile, offers a snapshot of Joy’s growth not only as a once-in-a-generation vocalist but also as songwriter, arranger and band leader. The album was tracked in streamlined sessions — just two or three takes of each tune — at one of jazz’s most hallowed sites, Van Gelder Studio.
Portrait highlights Joy’s prowess as a lyricist, with new arrangements that meld her thoughtful lyrics with music by Charles Mingus, Barry Harris and more. The album also features vibrant interpretations of standards, including a new arrangement of“You Stepped Out of a Dream” (out now). Portrait stands as a testament to Joy’s growth and the profound connection within her band—a group she hopes will continue to evolve together for years to come. Pre-order / pre-save Portrait (out October 11) HERE.
